My Blog, Thoughts from the trenches
I have been in childcare for almost 30 years. I started off my career in Brandon MB and after a few twists and turns through various programs and communities, I have landed in Portage la Prairie operating a group family child care program. When I think I have seen it all and got everything figured out, my children prove me wrong! There is never a dull moment when working with children.
I am always learning; from my kids, from my co-workers, from my peers and from the students at the college where I instruct part-time.
Join me in my adventures and ponderings as I travel through the world as seen by the children.

We have gone puzzle crazy around here! Before Christmas I bought several new 12 piece puzzles with pictures of heavy duty machines on them. They were a hit!! Several of our ambitious 2 year olds stepped up to the challenge and concurred them in no time. I loved to see how proud they were of themselves when they completed them. When we returned after the Christmas break they were back at them. When we first start working on puzzles we talked a lot about matching colours and lines, looking for similar shapes, and finding the straight edges. The kids are working on being able to see the picture come to together. I love how in a multi age program the younger kids watch the older ones and want to do what the older ones are doing. They strive to be “just like them’. Now one of the 1 year olds has decided she wants to try those puzzles too! She is working very hard at them and beams when we get one done. As I watched the kids complete these puzzles with increasing confidence I knew they were ready for a new challenge. I went in search of more puzzles last night and found a few. Today I gave them to the kids and watched them work at them and...
We have been open almost a year now and what a busy year it has been!! We have enjoyed meeting so many wonderful families and having the privilege of being able to care for so many great kids! With the beginning of 2015 I am excited to have our web site and blog up and running. The site and blog will be filled with information on what we are doing, important topics within parenting and child care, and hopefully start a few conversations with some interesting topics! As we all get back to a routine after the Christmas break, we have been welcomed with very cold temperatures outside and even colder wind chills. There will be lots of activities happening inside to help keep us busy and warm. I always love to see what games and activities the kids create during our extended inside...
Children, Naturally ELCC is a child-centred, play-based program because we know children learn best through play. Our schedule gives the children long blocks of free play time for discovery. There are few transition times to allow them lots of time to create complex play themes as well as the time to act them out.
Children should be allowed to exercise their independence through exploration in a safe and stimulating environment. Development of creativity, self-confidence and a positive self-concept should be nurtured in children; as well as respect for others and the environment.
